JUNIOR YOUTH EMPOWERMENT camp REGISTRATION
Junior youth (ages 11-14) have immense potential to act as determined agents of social transformation and have a desire to contribute to the betterment of society. This summer they will have the opportunity to use their potentialities to contribute to the well-being of the community and to develop their own skills and talents.
Each week they will focus on the development of certain capabilities that will help them participate more effectively in the planning, decision-making and development of their communities. This will be done through the study of materials designed to build capacity in this age group along side workshops and projects that help them put into practice what they are learning. Junior youth will explore the idea that as human beings we all depend on each other, that we are all members of one human family, and that we should try our best to improve the conditions of our communities. Junior youth will be guided to set in motion a process in which they think about the life of the community and how they can contribute to its betterment. Practically, they will be assisted to make observational statements about the community, speak to neighbours, carry out research, and design and implement a community project.
-
Junior youth will develop their math capabilities, such as accuracy, negative and irrational numbers as well as efficiency, justice, technology, and time. Junior youth will use their math skills to read the reality of the neighbourhood and design case studies to describe it.
-
Junior youth will be assisted to develop their ‘inner eye’ and ‘inner ear’, to see beyond the outer appearance of things and to listen for meaning. They will be assisted to think about the messages being conveyed in popular music, to analyse the messages in the media, and to think about the role of the arts in building a vibrant community. They will practise the techniques of visual arts, learn about rhythm and cords in music, and they will host a community gathering to share their talents with family and neighbours.
