2024-25 YOUTH INTERNSHIP

The South-East Ottawa Youth Education Centre offers a year-long internship program for youth in high school and post-secondary that aims to develop their capacity to contribute to the well-being and progress of their communities.

During the summer, interns will facilitate a conversation among community members centred on the role everyone plays in building a vibrant community. They will organise camps and festivals for junior youth and children, and community gatherings where families can discuss their hopes for the neighbourhood and organise projects to mobilise everyone to work together towards those aspirations.

During the school year, they will give particular attention to junior youth, helping 1-3 assigned 12-14 year-olds advance academically at a weekly pace, particularly in math and english.

Interns will each be assigned a community mentor, who will meet with them weekly to encourage, support, and explore possibilities in academics, professional career, and continuing to serve their communities.

The position will allow youth to build capacities necessary for entrance into university and the workforce. Skills gained through the internship include:

  • Team-building: work with community members to solve local issues.

  • Mentorship: help assigned junior youth

  • Leadership: lead camps, festivals and community gatherings for children, junior youth and families.

  • Organisation: plan and organise camps for children and junior youth focused on developing capacities for language, mathematics, art, health, and social action.
